Conor Morgan scored 27 points, and grabbed 14 rebounds to pace UBC's offence, which also got a 14-point, six-assist contribution from guard
Phil Jalalpoor. Forward
Patrick Simon came off the bench to score 11 points, and record seven rebounds.
Narcisse Ambanza and Denzel Lynch-Blair each scored 13 points to lead Winnipeg, while Billy Yaworsky had 12.
Up just 27-21 with about four minutes remaining in the first half, UBC went on a 15-5 run that extended into the third quarter to take control of the game.
The Wesmen closed to within nine points a couple of times in the third quarter but the Thunderbirds always had a reply, and were able to hold off all attempts at a comeback by the hosts.
Winnipeg made it 44-35 on a Lynch-Blair jump shot but
Anthony Mcnish converted one of his own on the next possession with help from Jalalpoor to restore the double-digit lead.
Mcnish returned the favour later, as he assisted on Jalalpoor's triple to give UBC a 50-38 lead in the third.
The two teams return to action Saturday, with tipoff slated for 7 p.m. CT / 5 p.m. PT at the Duckworth Centre.
