Prince George, BC - The Northern BC women's basketball team reeled off a wild 17-3 run in the dying minutes of Friday night's game against the UBC Thunderbirds at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre, earning an improbable 75-65 win, the program's first of the season.
Maddison Penn and Keylyn Filewich both recorded 19 points, and Penn also grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds for the T-Birds.
Madison Landry had 27 points to lead the Timberwolves.
Heading into the final frame, a 16-4 UNBC run saw UBC's once-double-digit lead shrink to just three, 56-53.
Alina Shakirova and Maria Mongomo nailed key triples during the T-Wolves' odds-defying late run, with Landry knocking down a pair of clutch jumpers to keep the 'Birds at bay. For UBC, their shooters went cold in those final minutes, posting a 1-of-8 line in that same stretch.
"They keyed on our key players, but we weren't hitting shots," said UBC guard
Jessica Hanson. "It's tough out there when you can't hit open shots."
With the victory, UNBC improves to 1-4, while the T-Birds drop to 3-2 on the season. The two sides are set to clash once more Saturday night with tip-off again set for 5 p.m. PT at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre.
"We are so young, and a game like tonight, our youth really shows," said Hanson. "Tomorrow we are going to come out stronger."
