Prince George, BC - The UBC men's basketball team turned a dominant third quarter into a comfortable 100-85 win over the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday night, besting their northern foes on their home court, the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre.
Phil Jalalpoor had 18 of his game-high 29 points in the first half, leading UBC to a 50-38 lead at the break.
The German guard's effectiveness also allowed
Conor Morgan some breathing room in the third frame, and the reigning Canada West Player of the Year sparked a 34-21 run. Izaiah Familia and Jalalpoor also contributed to the T-Birds' explosion, consistently making shots from the outside and spacing out the Timberwolves.
"We came out a little flat, and gave up some easy baskets early in the second half," said Timberwolves guard Tyrell Laing. "We dug ourselves a hole. Couple key guys get early fouls and it took a toll on us."
UNBC kept the score respectable with a strong fourth quarter, clawing back a 26-16 result in the final frame to end the game down just 15.
With the loss, the Timberwolves drop to 2-3, while the Thunderbirds improve to 3-2 on the Canada West season.
"Tomorrow is a new game, but we need to carry that momentum from the fourth quarter forward," said Laing. "That grit and toughness will help us next game."
The rematch between the two sides is again set to take place in the Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre, with tip-off set for 5:00 p.m. PT tomorrow night.
