VANCOUVER – Less than an hour before their first home pre-season game of the 2017-18 season, the UBC Thunderbirds had already bolstered their 2018-19 roster. UBC head coach
Deb Huband announced that 6'2" forward Tanis Metcalfe, a standout player for the Carson Graham Eagles of North Vancouver and member of Team BC, had committed to attend classes and play basketball at UBC.
"I have no doubt that Tanis will be successful both academically and athletically along with being a great role model as a Thunderbird," said Huband. "There is so much potential there, I'm excited to get on the court with her and start seeing what's possible."
Flanked by her parents, Colin and Trish, Metcalfe signed her letter of intent while being photographed on her new home court of War Memorial Gym.
"It feels amazing. I fell like my whole basketball career has led up to this moment. I'm very proud to be a Thunderbird," said Metcalfe. "It's been a dream since my childhood to go to my hometown university. It's a great opportunity and I'm super excited for next year."
Metcalfe adds length to Thunderbirds line-up, but also has the agility and quickness to get up and down the floor in transition.
"I think I'm going to run the court, use my length both offensively and defensively and bring energy to the team," added Metcalfe.
"She has lots of intangibles first off. This is a quality person and a quality character," said Huband. "I think she has tremendous potential to be an impact player in U SPORTS."
Metcalfe will now play her senior season for Carson Graham and try to lead the Eagles to a provincial championship. The UBC Thunderbirds' 2017-18 regular season begins October 27 with a home game versus UFV.
