Huskies hand 'Birds first defeat of season

SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies upset the No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds 95-78 Friday night on Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the PAC.

With the win, the Huskies (6-3) handed the T-Birds (8-1) their first loss of the season.

After a tightly contested first quarter the Huskies started to build momentum in the second frame. Guard Alex Unruh gave the squad even more confidence heading to the locker room at half time when he nailed a buzzer beating shot from his own three-point line to put Saskatchewan ahead 45-36.

The Huskies held a double digit lead for most of the third quarter, growing it as large as 17 at one point.

In the fourth, the No. 2 ranked team in the nation started to show signs of a potential comeback, but the Huskies squandered any chances of that by extending their lead again.

Jaylan Morgan led the Huskies with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting including a 5-of-7 performance from three-point land. Shane Osayande led the Huskies on the glass with nine rebounds.

UBC was led offensively by Conor Morgan's 22 points. Four-of-five starters reached double digits in the game.

The two teams tip off again on Saturday night at 8 pm on Ron & Jane Centre Court at the PAC.
