T-Birds finish off Bisons with 3-0 win

WINNIPEG – The fourth-ranked UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball team completed the weekend sweep of the host Manitoba Bisons with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22) victory Saturday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

The Thunderbirds took the first set of the evening 25-21 with strong play coming from fifth-year star Danielle Brisebois, who had three kills, a service ace, two digs and a block. Kearley Abbott led her Bisons squad with four kills and a service ace.

The second set was 16-15 in favour of UBC at the technical timeout. Maggie Li of the Thunderbirds would put down a service ace, her second of the game, to help push her side to an eventual 25-23 set win for the visitors.

The Bisons began to turn their game around in the third set.  A few service aces, one from first-year player Jocelyn Koswin had her team up before UBC fought back gained the lead at the mid way point, 16-14. The Thunderbird attack kept coming from several different players. Manitoba would make it close but the T-Birds would go on to take the third and final set 25-22.

Abbott lead Manitoba in kills with seven to go along with three service aces. Brisebois and Li finished the contest with nine kills each for UBC.

Manitoba will look to rebound next week when they take on the Calgary Dinos (Jan.20-21). UBC will be back at home playing against the Mt. Royal Cougars (Jan.20-21).
