Women's Rugby Len Catling (Sr. Manager, Communications and Media Relations)

'Continuous intensity' will be key for 'Birds when Dinos come to town

The Matchup

It's always a good battle when the UBC Thunderbirds and Calgary Dinos meet in Canada West action, no matter what the sport. Women's rugby is no exception as the two universities have waged some memorable battles in recent years.

In 2015 the two sides met in the season opener, which saw the Dinos sweep aside the 'Birds 31-17. In 2014 the 'Blue and Gold' upset the 8th ranked Dinos, 24-19, to open their season and carried on to win the Canada West bronze medal.

Last Action

UBC came out of the gates blazing to open their 2016 season against UVic. The 'Birds were leading 12-3 after 30 minutes before the Vikes scored 27 straight points and went on to win 47-17.

Calgary opens its 2016 campaign against UVic before boarding BC Ferries to Vancouver for their Sunday afternoon date with the T-Birds.

By the Numbers

9 - the current winless streak for the 'Birds in Canada West rugby action, dating back to 2014. They are hungry for a 'w' and looking to put one on the board in front of their home crowd.

6 – the amount of tries UBC winger Ciara Malone has scored in her last 5 games played. The 'Birds leading scorer needs some help offensively for UBC to be successful this weekend.

Players To Watch

Gillian Boag – (#7, flanker) - the do-everything flanker was making tackles all over the pitch against the Vikes.

"She's a very special player," says UBC Interim Head Coach Dean Murten. "She always plays a high tempo, high energy, physical game and I'm just hoping others learn from that."

Quotable

"The thing for me is we have to have belief and confidence in our abilities," says Murten. "We certainly showed that in the first thirty minutes against UVic. We have the high quality players and we just need to keep confident in our teammates to keep that intensity going."
