The Thunderbirds remember a loyal and tenacious teammate

VANCOUVER- The annual women's basketball alumni game took on a much deeper meaning this year as friends and teammates of Beverly (Bev) Ann Barnes gathered to remember the UBC basketball legend who passed away suddenly in mid-August.

Bev Barnes was a member of the 1972-73 UBC women's basketball team, one of the most dominant teams in the history of Canadian university women's basketball. She was a standout on the team that won the Canadian University championship with a 24-1 record. Barnes and her teammates from the 1972-73 team were inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

"Bev was a talented and passionate athlete, an intense competitor, and a loyal teammate," said her UBC teammate Deb Phelan. "She was also a free spirit and great deal of fun."

Barnes went on to play for her country, including on the Canadian women's basketball team at the 1976 Olympics.

"'Barney' was an extremely tenacious player, all business when she was on the floor but always ready for mischief when she was not," said fellow Thunderbird and hall-of-famer Peggy Robinson. "She was a very talented forward who played both defense and offence equally well."

Barnes earned her Master's degree in education from UBC and had a long career as a teacher and Vice Principal in the South Delta School District.

"She was truly unique and left an unforgettable impression on everyone that she met," added Robinson.

A celebration of Bev Barnes' life will take place at the Quilchena Golf and Country Club in Richmond, BC on September 23rd from 2 PM – 5 PM. In lieu of flowers the family asks you donate to your favorite charity.
