VANCOUVER- The annual women's basketball alumni game took on a much deeper meaning this year as friends and teammates of Beverly (Bev) Ann Barnes gathered to remember the UBC basketball legend who passed away suddenly in mid-August.Â
Â
Bev Barnes was a member of the
1972-73 UBC women's basketball team, one of the most dominant teams in the history of Canadian university women's basketball. She was a standout on the team that won the Canadian University championship with a 24-1 record. Barnes and her teammates from the 1972-73 team were inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Â
"Bev was a talented and passionate athlete, an intense competitor, and a loyal teammate," said her UBC teammate Deb Phelan. "She was also a free spirit and great deal of fun."
Â
Barnes went on to play for her country, including on the Canadian women's basketball team at the 1976 Olympics.
Â
"'Barney' was an extremely tenacious player, all business when she was on the floor but always ready for mischief when she was not," said fellow Thunderbird and hall-of-famer Peggy Robinson. "She was a very talented forward who played both defense and offence equally well."

Â
Barnes earned her Master's degree in education from UBC and had a long career as a teacher and Vice Principal in the South Delta School District.
Â
"She was truly unique and left an unforgettable impression on everyone that she met," added Robinson.
Â
A celebration of Bev Barnes' life will take place at the Quilchena Golf and Country Club in Richmond, BC on September 23rd from 2 PM – 5 PM. In lieu of flowers the family asks you donate to your favorite charity.
