Jesse Symons debuts as UBC head coach

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team fell 4-1 to the host Eastern Washington Eagles Saturday in a non-conference matchup, which was the season opener for both squads.

The defending CIS champions opened the scoring in the first half on a 39th-minute goal by reigning national tournament most valuable player Jasmin Dhanda (Surrey, B.C.).

Eastern Washington then replied with four second-half markers, a rally sparked by Savannah Hoekstra, who tied the game in the 63rd minute before potting the game winner in the 64th.

The Thunderbirds directed eight shots towards the EWU net, with half of them hitting the target.

It was the competitive debut for UBC head coach Jesse Symons, who gave 19 players game action today in Cheney, Wash. The T-Birds will play North Idaho College Monday in Cheney.
