VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team evened their pre-season record with a 2-0 road win over the North Idaho College Cardinals on Monday afternoon. The victory in the non-conference, exhibition affair will go down as
Jesse Symons first as UBC's head coach. The win comes on the heels of a 4-1 loss to the Eastern Washington Eagles on Saturday and gives the Thunderbirds' a pre-season record of 1-1.
For the second time in two games striker
Jasmin Dhanda opened the scoring for the Thunderbirds. The crafty Dhanda converted a slip pass from
Shayla Chorney in the 78th minute. It only took until the 84th minute for UBC to double its lead, when third-year midfielder
Elizabeth Swoboda converted a pinpoint cross from
Meagan Pasternak.
"There was lots of positive play on both sides of the ball," said Symons. "We were able to play 25 players in our first two games."
The Thunderbirds outshot the Cardinals 31-2 overall, allowing Emily Moore and
Marlee Maracle to combine for the easy shutout in the UBC goal. "The team really responded well to what we learnt in our first match," added Symons. "We had some excellent movement today with quick, fluid attacks." UBC continues it's exhibition season with a match against UNBC Saturday, August 20th at South Surrey Athletic Park.
