Cusati powers 'Birds to sweep of Red Hawks with two Sunday wins

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds baseball team (27-12, 13-6) capped off their perfect weekend against the Simpson Red Hawks (4-34, 2-15) at Thunderbird Park, winning 5-3 and 9-0 in their Sunday doubleheader. The wins push UBC's win streak against Simpson to 19 games, dating back to 2013.

At the plate, third baseman Anthony Cusati (Burnaby, B.C.) was electric in Sunday's two games, notching a combined five RBIs on four hits, while scoring a run of his own.

The 'Birds earned their first win of the day in dramatic fashion, coming back from a 3-0 deficit with five unanswered runs of their own in the back half of the contest.

The Red Hawks looked prime for an upset after the first frame of the opening game on Sunday, scoring two runs in the top half of the inning. Shortstop Kyle Fegurson and catcher Aaron Curfman led off with a pair of back-to-back doubles, scoring the former.

With Kenneth Sellers, pinch-running for Curfman, on third, designated hitter Blaine Hokama singled to drive in Simpson's second run of the frame.

After the Red Hawks tacked on their third run of the contest in the fourth inning, the 'Birds began to claw their way back in the fifth. UBC got on the board after first baseman Vinny Martin (Pender Island, B.C.) launched a triple, the was driven in on a sacrifice fly from Brendan Rose (Calgary).

In the sixth, a Simpson throwing error landed Anthony Olson (Emonton) on second base, after which he was driven home on a deep Cusati single to left field.

The 'Birds took their first lead of the game in the seventh frame – with Olson and John Whaley (Oakville, Ont.) on base, Bruce Yari (Waterloo, Ont.) smashed a triple to right field, putting the Blue and Gold up 4-3. Yari then made it home on a throwing error from Ferguson.

Tyler Gillies (London, Ont.) pitched two innings of shutout ball to seal the win for the 'Birds, after Connor Noble (Vancouver), who started the contest with six innings, and Ethan Skuija (Victoria, B.C.), with one, also saw time on the mound for UBC.

The second game was decided after the first two innings, as the 'Birds put up three and five runs in the opening two frames.

With Whaley and Yari in scoring position, Cusati's single and Griff Goyer's (Burnaby, B.C.) double drove the pair in, before a Martin sac fly brought Cusati home to make it 3-0 after one.

The 'Birds poured it on in the second, with five runs scoring on four hits. After loading up the bases, Whaley (single), Yari (hit-by-pitch), Cusati (single), Goyer (sac fly), and Qualicum Beach, B.C. native Mackenzie Parlow (walk) all accounted for RBIs in the frame.

Cusati capped off his terrific weekend, and the day's scoring, with a double that scored Yari from second in the sixth inning.

Starting pitcher Jeremy Newton (Toronto) saw seven innings of work, allowing just four hits and no runs, while Brad Smith (Vancouver) and Christian Botnick (Brampton, Ont.) closed out the final two innings.

The 'Birds will now turn their attention to the Corban Warriors, as they head down to Oregon to take on their NAIA West foes in a pair of doubleheaders next Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9.
