Productive weekend in Lewiston sets up huge series against College of Idaho for Thunderbirds

VANCOUVER – Lewis-Clark State College starting pitcher Peter Irvin did just enough to get the better of UBC Thunderbird hurler Jeremy Newton (Toronto, Ont.) Sunday afternoon at Harris Field. Irvin gave up a single run over six innings, while Newton gave up two over 6.2 innings as the Warriors upended the TBirds 3-1, to split the all-important four game series.

The Warriors improved to 36-7 overall and 22-5 in the NAIA West while UBC falls to 31-16 and 17-10 in conference play where they remain tied with College of Idaho for second behind LCSC.

The top finisher in the conference besides LCSC will host the NAIA West tournament the first week of May with the winner earning an automatic bid to an NAIA World Series Opening Round.

Lewis-Clark State opened the scoring in the third inning when they strung together a double and single to score second baseman Gunnar Buhner. Gunnar is the son of former Seattle Mariner great Jay Buhner.

UBC tied the game in the fourth inning when the Bruce Yari (Waterloo, Ont.), hitting out of the number two spot in the TBird batting order, singled and eventually scored on a throwing error.

But the Warriors took back the lead for good in the fifth when Logan Griffin, who collected eight hits over the four games, doubled and then scored on consecutive wild pitches by Newton.

The Thunderbirds threatened in the seventh as a pair of bunts and another error put two on with none out, but a groundout and a double play ended the threat.

In the eighth Warrior left fielder Dylan Tashjian added some insurance, driving a 1-0 fastball over the centerfield fence for his first home run of the season and the 3-1 win.

Despite losing the final two games of the series the Thunderbirds must be quietly elated to leave Lewiston with two wins over the weekend. The Warriors won all 19 home games they had played this season before the 'Birds came to town.

UBC now travels back home to Point Grey for a four game weekend set versus the College of Idaho. With the teams tied for second in the NAIA West, the playoff implications of the back-to-back doubleheaders are astronomical. First pitch in the series goes 1pm on Saturday, April 23rd at UBC.
