LEWISTON, Idaho – A quiet game turned wild in the final three innings as the University of British Columbia (30-14, 16-8 NAIA W) scored six runs in the final three frames, including a pair in the 10th inning, to snap the Lewis-Clark State College (34-6, 20-4 NAIA W) baseball team's 22-game home winning streak.
Â
Lewis-Clark State had also won their last eight extra-inning games, but the TBirds got some clutch hits in the later innings and capitalized on Warrior mistakes in extras to grab a huge road victory late in the season.
Â
LCSC ace Kevin Hamann scattered six hits over his first seven frames and needed just 70 pitches. His performance made it seem like the Warriors two runs, one in the second and one in the third, would hold up.
Â
The arm of
Alex Webb (Surrey, B.C.) kept UBC within striking distance as the big right hander continued his dominant season going seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Â
The game turned in the eighth as UBC tallied back-to-back singles to chase Hamann, before a common sight transpired for the 'Blue and Gold'.
Bruce Yari (Waterloo, Ont.) stepped to the dish and smashed an RBI double, before back-to-back wild pitches from the LC reliever put the Thunderbirds on top, 3-2.
Â
The lead was short lived as Lewis-Clark State scored a pair of runs, on two singles and a walk in the bottom half of the eight to take a 4-3 lead.
Â
In the ninth LCSC closer Noel Gonzalez, who hadn't allowed an earned run all season, walked two batters before being pulled. The next LCSC pitcher didn't fare any better as
Anthony Olson (Edmonton, Alta.) singled, setting the stage for Yari. Yari calmly pushed a sacrifice fly into the outfield to plate the tying run
Â
In the 10th, UBC drew a leadoff walk and put runners at second and third with a
Brendan Rose (Calgary, Alta.) single and a LC throwing error. An intentional walk loaded the bases before a wild pitch scored
Anthony Cusati (Burnaby, B.C.). A perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Braeden Alleman (Surrey, B.C) allowed Rose to score the insurance run.
Â
Tyler Gillies (London, Ont.) sat down the Warriors in the bottom of the tenth to earn his second win, working three innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits.
Â
The two teams will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 16 with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
