VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds baseball team (20-11, 6-5) dropped both halves of a Saturday doubleheader with the College of Idaho Yotes (21-7, 9-3), falling 8-2 in the first contest, and then 4-3 in the rematch.
The first game saw
Alex Webb (Surrey, B.C.) throw just over six innings, as the UBC ace suffered his first loss in his eighth start of the season, surrendering seven hits and eight runs, while sitting down nine Idaho batters. At the plate, rookie outfielder
Lucas Soper's (Vancouver) fifth-inning home run provided a lone offensive bright spot, as Idaho pitcher sat down seven through strikes, three through fly balls, and nine through forced ground-outs.
The Yotes pounced on Webb early, scoring five runs before the dust had settled in the third inning. In the fourth, Hunter Hanson, after scoring a run of his own in the first, smacked a double to left center, scoring Seth Champlin.
Mitch Skaggs also had a terrific game at the plate for Idaho, bringing in five RBI on just two hits, one of which was a two-run homer in the seventh frame.
Griffy Goyer (Burnaby, B.C.) tacked on another run for UBC in the bottom of the eighth inning, as his double scored
Anthony Olson (Edmonton).
The second game was a much tighter affair, though two eighth-inning runs from the 'Birds weren't enough to make up for Idaho's three-run second frame, the key swing of which was a two-run shot from Skaggs that scored Nathan Hundley and Johnny Hyland.
Anthony Cusati (Burnaby, B.C.) and
Brendan Rose (Calgary) nearly got the 'Birds back to even footing in the eighth, as they each notched singles that scored
Bruce Yari (Waterloo, Ont.) and Soper, respectively.
UBC pitcher
Curtis Taylor (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) gave up nine hits and four runs in six innings of work, while his Idaho counterpart Jake Eddy surrendered just four hits and a single run in his seven innings.
The 'Birds will look to take the final contest of the three-game series tomorrow morning, as the first pitch is set to be thrown out by 10:00 a.m. (PT).
