RECAP: Thunderbirds take down Golden Eagles 12-4 in Golden State

VANCOUVER - Pitcher Alex Webb (Surrey, B.C.) gave up just three hits and struck out four batters in six shutout innings of work on Thursday, as the UBC Thunderbirds baseball team dominated the California State, Los Angeles Golden Eagles to the tune of a 12-4 rout on the road in Lancaster, Calif.

Left fielder Lucas Soper (Vancouver), who notched two hits and scored three runs, shortstop Kyle McComb (Surrey, B.C.), who bagged a hit, a run, and three RBI, and catcher Braeden Allemann (Surrey, B.C.), who picked up a hit, three runs, and two RBI, had terrific showings at the plate for the Blue and Gold.

After getting up 2-0 after the opening two frames, the third inning saw the 'Birds take control of the contest, exploding for four runs. McComb knocked in the first of those four runs, as the baseman's well-placed bunt allowed Soper to score from third.

Next, a couple of errors cost the Golden Eagles. First, Lichel Hirakawa-Kao (Vancouver) was allowed to reach first base on an error from the Cal State L.A. second baseman, a mistake that also allowed Allemann to score from second. Then, following a single from Anthony Olson (Edmonton), McComb and Hirakawa-Kao made it across home plate after a misfired throw from right field.

After adding another run in the sixth, the T-Birds put away the contest with a five-run seventh inning. After Tyler Enns (East St. Paul, Man.), Soper, and Vinny Martin (Pender Island, B.C.) loaded the bases, third baseman Anthony Cusati (Burnaby, B.C.) cracked a double down the infield line, allowing the former two to score. Cusati and Martin made it home soon after, as Allemann knocked out a double of his own (he advanced to third on the throw.)

McComb wrapped up the scoring for the inning, and the game, as he flied out to drive Allemann home on the next at-bat.

Patrick Van den Brink (Surrey, B.C.), who came on in relief of Webb after the sixth inning, threw three shutout innings to seal the result for the 'Birds.

There's no rest for the weary, as the 'Birds still have two games left on their California swing - tomorrow, February 19, they'll face the Cal State San Bernadino Coyotes, whom they played on Wednesday, with the opening pitch set for 12 noon (PT). Then, this Saturday, February 20, will see the T-Birds and Golden Eagles get reacquainted, as round two between UBC and Cal State L.A. gets going at 11 a.m. (PT).
