UBC earns second straight double OT win over Pronghorns

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (4-6-0) needed double overtime for the second time in as many days against the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns (2-3-3) but once again earned the win as Anthony Bardaro scored his second of the game with a strong drive to the net. The T-Birds have now won three straight contests and sit tied for fifth place in the Canada West.

"(Lethbridge) scored a late goal in the third period and we just stayed together and stayed composed and as a coach you really like to see that," said UBC head coach Sven Butenschon. "Besides the first 10 minutes today, I thought we played a really smart game. Our puck control was better, we were smarter with the puck, we didn't give it up as much and the penalty kill was great."

After Bardaro and Manraj Hayer each scored in the second period to give UBC a 2-1 lead heading into the third, the Pronghorns evened the game with eight minutes remaining as Cory Millette scored his second of the game.

The Thunderbirds had a number of quality scoring chances in the third but couldn't beat Damien Ketlo, who made 24 saves in the loss.

After 4-on-4 overtime solved nothing, the T-Birds took less than a minute of 3-on-3 double overtime to finish with the win. Just 32 seconds in, Bardaro powered across the low slot and outwaited Ketlo for his second of the game and seventh of the season.

Bardaro has now scored in six straight games with a total of 11 points in that span.

"His skill level is incredible," said Butenschon of the fourth-year forward. "More often than not the way he gets points is by doing the little things, by beating their defencemen to the net. That takes will and determination so when you combine that with his skill set good things happen and it's beautiful to watch."

Matt Hewitt put up yet another strong performance in goal for UBC making 26 saves for his second win of the season earning the game's second star.

The Pronghorns opened scoring on the power play 5:33 into the first period with Millette's first of the game and second of the season. From the right side of the net, Torrin White centred the puck towards the front of the net. It went off a UBC defenceman's stick right to Millette, who made the tap-in.

Despite three power plays of their own in the frame, the Thunderbirds couldn't find the back of the net but did create several very good chances. UBC finished the game 0-for-5 on the man advantage while the Pronghorns went 1-for-5.

The T-Birds got on the board 3:36 into the second period with Bardaro's first of the game from Chase Clayton.

UBC then took the lead for the first time with just under five minutes remaining in the period when Hayer made a power drive towards the net from the right-wing side and roofed the puck just under the crossbar for his first of the season. Adam Rossignol and Riley Guenther picked up the assists.

Now a point ahead of the Pronghorns and tied with the Bisons for fifth in the Canada West, the T-Birds have a week off from league action before hitting the road to face the Regina Cougars November 18-19.

"The fact that we have a bit more confidence will definitely make the week a little more enjoyable," said Butenschon. "But you have to make the best of your practice time and we can't go into Regina rusty, we have to do whatever it takes to get points."

UBC will team up with the Vancouver Canucks for a fundraising event on Nov. 12 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

Lethbridge will travel to Winnipeg for two games against the Manitoba Bisons next weekend.
