Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Andrew Hamilton (University of Regina)

Tough night for the Thunderbirds in Regina

REGINA, Sask. - Rookie forward Tristan Frei had two goals and two assists as the University of Regina men's hockey team exploded for a 6-1 win over the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West play at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.

Cody Fowlie added a goal and two assists while Colton Sparrow had a goal and a helper. Tyler Bell and Tyler King each scored their second goals of the season and J.J. Coleshaw pitched in with two assists.

Michael Stenerson added the lone UBC goal late in the third period.

Fowlie opened the scoring with his second of the season just over the halfway mark of the opening frame, following a UBC turnover in their own zone. Frei played the puck up the right boards for the Cougar captain, who turned and fired a beauty of a shot that went off the post and in to put Regina up 1-0.

Regina (2-9-0) erupted for four goals in the second period, putting things out of reach after 40 minutes. Frei's first goal of the night came at the 6:47 mark, as he found himself in the right spot and was able to bat in a rebound off a low Fowlie shot. Coleshaw also assisted on Frei's second of the campaign.

Frei scored again just under three minutes later, as Sparrow fed a  saucer pass in front and a streaking Frei was able to tip it past Matt Hewitt. Sparrow netted his first goal as a Cougar at the 14:31 mark, banging in a rebound after a wild scramble in front, and Bell scored on a point shot that deflected off a UBC defender's stick before the period ended.

UBC broke Andy Desautels' shutout bid late in the third period, as a Desautels save produced a rebound that ended up in the stick of Stenerson.  The UBC forward was able to retrieve the puck and turn and fire a wrist shot past the blocker of the Cougars netminder.

King put the cherry on top with just over three minutes to play, taking a feed from Fowlie as a trailer on a Cougar rush and beating Hewitt with a quick wrist shot.

Desautels was nearly flawless on the night, making 36 saves for his second win of the Canada West season. Hewitt made 23 saves for UBC.

The Cougars and Thunderbirds will battle again on Saturday night, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. (5 p.m. PT) at The Co-operators Centre.
