Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Jeff Sargeant

UBC upended on the road

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (0-3) fell short of claiming their first win of the Canada West men's hockey season Friday night, suffering a 1-0 loss to the host Calgary Dinos (1-0) at the Father David Bauer Arena.

The Thunderbirds had their chances on the power play as the Dinos took five straight penalties through the first two periods but UBC was unable to capitalize finishing the night 0-for-5. It was a game full of power play chances but the night belonged to the penalty killers as the T-Birds denied the Dinos on all seven of their opportunities.

UBC head coach Sven Butenschon liked the overall effort from his squad and is preaching more of the same Saturday as the T-Birds look to get the weekend split.

"We carried the play for most of the game, we're just a bit snake bitten right now," said Butenschon.

The Dinos held the Thunderbirds to only one shot in the middle stanza, and put away the first and only goal of the game.

Mitch Cook skated across the crease and was denied by UBC's Matt Hewitt, Logan Fisher picked up the rebound walked into the slot and put home his first as a Dino, beating Hewitt five-hole.

Hewitt stopped 28 Calgary shots and was strong between the pipes for the T-Birds all night.

"He was tracking the puck well," said Butenschon. "His rebound control was great, he played the puck well and the defencemen did a good job in front of him making sure he could see the puck as well."

UBC took a late penalty in the third period, pulling Hewitt for 5-on-5 action but couldn't solve Steven Stanford who stopped all 20 shots that came his way for his fourth CIS career shutout.

While Butenschon liked his team's game for the most part he hopes to see more discipline in Saturday's rematch.

"We need fewer penalties and to put together three periods, put together a complete game," said Butenschon.

The puck is set to drop at 1 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
