Thunderbirds focus on positives amidst 'snake bitten' start to 2016

CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos swept the weekend with a 1-0 victory against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, Saturday afternoon, Oct. 15th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.

"We are just trying to focus on the positives right now," said UBC Head Coach Sven Butenschon when asked about the 'Birds four game losing streak to start the season. "In the long run this adversity will make us better people and better players. We got thirty-five shots today. We are a bit snake bitten right now."

In a rematch of last night's Dinos 1-0 victory, the Thunderbirds weren't going to let penalty trouble interfere with their game, as both teams managed to stay out of the penalty box for the most part in the first period.

Dinos Coda Gordon almost had the first goal of the game after his penalty. Catching UBC's defense on the Dinos line Gordon came out of the box to a break away pass. Looking to Derek Dun blocker side, Gordon hit the post, keeping the game at a standstill at the end of the first.

"Dun got some action today and played great," said Butenschon. "It was good to see."

The Thunderbirds began to run into penalty trouble in the middle stanza. Denying Calgary on one of its power plays but they couldn't keep the puck out of the net for Calgary's second power play of the period.

Brayden Sherbinin passed the puck to Coda Gordon across the blue line who hit Chris Collins with a pass down low on the goal line. Collins spotted Drydn Dow back-door, making a cross-crease pass for Dow to tap in.

The Dinos held onto their lead throughout the third period. The Thunderbirds pulled Dun with just over a minute left in the period but the Thunderbirds just couldn't beat Steven Stanford for a second straight game.

"We were actually laughing about it a bit at the bench," said Butenschon. "We would generate these great scoring chances and then their goalies would make these glorious saves. It's going to be dirty goal that will be the first one that goes in. Then we can go from there."

Stanford increased his CIS career shutout tally to five with the second win against UBC this weekend, stopping all 34 shots that came his way.

UBC will play their home opener next weekend at the tDoug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre against the University of Alberta Golden Bears, Oct. 21-22.
