RECAP: T-Birds swept on the road

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars completed a weekend sweep of the UBC Thunderbirds, defeating them 1-0 on Saturday night at Flames Community Arenas. Zack Henry scored the lone goal of the game for MRU.

Mount Royal came out flying for the second straight night in front of their home faithful. The Cougars energy line of David Stephens, Jamie King and Zack Henry was all over the Thunderbirds in their own zone.

At the 10:38 mark, Henry grabbed a deflected dump in and went in all alone from the blue line in. He went backhand and beat Eric Williams (Langley, B.C.) to put Mount Royal ahead 1-0.

Just minutes later Shaun MacPherson took and cross-checking penalty leaving the Cougars a man short. Emerson Hrynyk, playing in only his second game back from injury, got a little too overzealous and took a boarding penalty to give the Thunderbirds a 5-on-3.

Mount Royal was able to hold them off thanks to some solid goaltending by Colin Cooper.

Both teams took three penalties in the second period but were unable to capitalize on the power play.

Early in third, Shaun MacPherson took another cross-checking penalty but Cam Maclise was exceptional on the penalty kill, clearing the zone three times.

Cooper faced eight shots heading into the third period but was forced to make several key saves at the end of the game. In total Cooper stopped 23 shots for the shutout. Williams made 32 saves in a losing cause.

Mount Royal improves to 11-5-2 with the victory, moving just one point back of the second place Alberta Golden Bears. UBC drops to 8-7-3 on the season and fall to fifth place in the conference.

The Cougars will travel to Winnipeg next weekend for a weekend series with the red-hot Manitoba Bisons. The Thunderbirds will be on the road again when they will head to Edmonton to face the Alberta Golden Bears. Friday night's contest is set for 6 p.m. PT.
