RECAP: 'Birds lose 6-3 on the road

EDMONTON – Kruise Reddick recorded a third period natural hat-trick to lift the Alberta Golden Bears to a 6-3 win over the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at Clare Drake Arena.

Jamie Crooks, Thomas Carr and Brett Ferguson also scored for the Golden Bears, while Joe Antilla (Madeira Park, B.C.), Scott MacDonald (Surrey, B.C.) and Luke Lockhart (Burnaby, B.C.) found the net for UBC. Ryan Demharter made 17 stops on 20 shots to record his second win of the season.

Coming off a sweep last week in Manitoba, Alberta came out flying early in the first period against UBC. The Bears took control from the puck drop, and held an early 9-2 shot advantage halfway through the first. Crooks would make the possession time count, as he banged in the rebound off the Riley Kieser point shot to open the scoring. Eric Williams (Langley, B.C.) would make another four saves it the first to keep it a one-goal game after 20 minutes.

Goals and physical play were at large in the second period, as the two teams combined for five goals and multiple bone-jarring hits. UBC tied the game at one early in the second with an Antilla power-play goal. After multiple chances flew wide of the Bears net, Anthony Bardaro's (Delta, B.C.) quick shot glanced off Antilla in the slot, and found a way past Demharter.

Both teams exchanged massive open ice hits throughout the period, and the after whistle skirmishes increased in an incredibly tight checking and scrappy game. UBC would take the lead halfway through period two, as another goal was scored off a rebound, this time MacDonald cleaned up the garbage to make it 2-1 T-Birds.

Alberta would quickly tie things up at 2-2. Ferguson would finish a beautiful tic-tac-toe play with a tap in goal beside the UBC net. However, the Thunderbirds were quick to respond. Lockhart's spin shot from the faceoff circle caught Demharter napping, restoring the one-goal UBC lead. Capping off a wild second period, Carr ripped in a one-timer from just outside the slot to even the game at three with just 19 seconds left in the second.

Reddick sealed the game in the third, scoring all three Alberta goals. He started by flicking a quick shot over Williams shoulder halfway through the frame.  Reddick then followed that up with a phenomenal tip in front, off the Jordan Rowley point shot. Reddick would then complete the hat-trick with a nifty shot just under the bar from inside the UBC crease, sealing the three-goal win for the home side.

Alberta and UBC will continue their inter-provincial showdown on Saturday, as the two heavyweights go toe-to-toe for round No.4 this season at 5 p.m. PT at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
