VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team wrapped up its own tournament with a 7-0 shutout of the Northwest Eagles of Kirkland, Wash., on Sunday afternoon at Thunderbird Stadium.
Â
"We created a lot chances for ourselves last game but we didn't finish so we wanted to get numbers in the box and really attack the ball and I thought we were successful with that today," said UBC head coach
Marisa Kovacs, who earned her first victory as the leader of the Thunderbirds. "I'm glad we bounced back with a convincing win against a good side."
Â
Midfielder
Taylor Shannik (Delta, B.C.) and defender
Shayla Chorney (Vancouver) each scored twice to lead the UBC offence.
Â
Shannik got things going early, finding the net in the second minute. The fifth-year midfielder drove the ball from outside of the penalty box to the top left of the net to give the home side momentum and a 1-0 advantage.
Â
After a couple of UBC shots on target, the Thunderbirds doubled their lead in 29th minute when
Nicole Sydor (Delta, B.C.) converted a pass from defender
Aman Shergill (Surrey, B.C.) and put the ball in the bottom right of the net to allow her team to go into halftime up 2-0.
Â
Chorney started the second half with two straight goals, slotting home a cross from
Amrit Berar (Richmond, B.C.) in the 53rd minute and notching her second just seven minutes later.
Â
Shannik notched her brace in the 77th, scoring directly from a corner kick to make it 5-0.
Â
Then a pair of youngsters got on the score sheet late as Sydney Langen (Regina, Sask.) put a shot into the top right corner in the 83rd minute before
Elizabeth Swoboda (Livingston, Mont.) knocked a rebound in off the left goalpost to finish off the offensive output for UBC.
Â
Olivia de Goede (Victoria, B.C.) made one save to earn the clean sheet against the Eagles, the 20th-ranked squad in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Â
UBC's next game will be at Western Washington, an NCAA Div. 2 program, in Bellingham, Wash., on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 3:30 p.m.
