VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds took advantage of mistakes from the Western Washington Vikings to claim a 2-1 overtime triumph in a non-conference game at Harrington Field in Bellingham, Wash., on a windy Saturday afternoon.
Â
UBC's winning goal came in the 104th minute,
Madison Guy (Langley, B.C.) stealing a pass and depositing it from 10 yards into the lower right corner of the net.
WWU's only goal came in the 14th minute on an own goal as an errant header by a UBC defender got by the goalkeeper.
The Thunderbirds tied the game at 1-1 two minutes into the second half.
Amrit Berar (Richmond, B.C.) took advantage of a poor pass and found
Jasmin Dhanda (Surrey, B.C.) with a long ball for a breakaway goal.
WWU's best opportunity to take the lead in the second half came with 15 minutes left in regulation when a header by Sierra Shugarts bounced off the left goal post.
The Vikings had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, but were outshot 15-14.
The win is an impressive one for UBC as Western Washington was picked in a preseason coaches' poll to finish first in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference of the NCAA's Div. 2.
Â
Saturday's game is also the last preseason contest for the Thunderbirds before the start of Canada West regular season play on Sept. 5, when UBC faces the Victoria Vikes in the provincial capital.
