VANCOUVER – The No. 24-ranked UBC Thunderbirds beat the Concordia (Ore.) Cavaliers 9-1 in the team's finale at the Treasure Valley Collegiate Baseball Icebreaker in Nampa, Idaho, Sunday.
First baseman
Bruce Yari of Waterloo, Ont., went 3-for-5 at plate and drove in three runs to lead the UBC offence. The Thunderbirds doubled up Concordia in total hits, 16-8.

Yari's RBI single to centre field in the first inning opened the scoring. He then crossed home plate when third baseman
Anthony Cusati (Burnaby) singled through the left on the next at-bat.

Cam Firth (London, Ont.) and left fielder
Brendan Rose (Calgary) drove in runs in the third inning to put UBC up 4-0.

The Thunderbirds went up by five on an RBI ground out by second baseman
Vinny Martin (Pender Island, B.C.) in the bottom of the fourth inning that scored outfielder
Tyler Enns (Winnipeg).

In the sixth, Enns doubled to left to bring home shortstop
Nick Spillman (Welland, Ont.). On the next play, right fielder
Jerod Bartnik (Surrey) singled to score Enns. Two batters later, Yari knocked an RBI double to right centre to plate Bartnik and put the T-Birds up 8-0.

After Concordia got on the board in the seventh inning, Yari drove in his third run of the day in the eighth, scoring second baseman

Jeremy Newton allowed just two hits in 4.1 innings of work before being forced off the mound in the fifth due to an injury.
Curtis Taylor (Port Coquitlam) gave up just one run in 4.2 innings of relief to earn his second victory of the season.

UBC improves to 9-3 and will head out on an eight-game road trip to California on Wednesday. The first game for UBC in the Golden State will be on Friday, Feb. 13 at California State-Los Angeles. The last matchup of the trip will be on Saturday, Feb. 21 in Atherton, Calif., against Oregon Tech.
