VANCOUVER – The No. 10-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (6-2) settled for a split of their Canada West men's basketball doubleheader at No. 8 Calgary (5-3), as the Dinos claimed a 101-82 victory on Saturday night.
Â
Guard
Jordan Jensen-Whyte (Calgary) recorded 21 points to lead UBC, and four other T-Birds reached double digits in scoring but it wasn't enough to extend the team's winning streak to seven contests.
Â
Canada West leading scorer Thomas Cooper continued his torrid pace, with 35 points and seven rebounds for Calgary, while Lars Schlueter had 29 points.Â
Â
With layups from
Dominic Gilbert (Sydney, Australia) and
Luka Zaharijevic (Vancouver) and two foul shots from Philip Jalalpoor (Shifferstadt, Germany) to within two points of Calgary at 27-25 with 4:26 before the end of the second quarter. But the Dinos closed the half on a 15-4 to take a double-digit lead (42-29) into the break, thanks in part to a 29-18 advantage in rebounding.
Â
UBC chipped away at the Calgary lead in the third. Jensen-Whyte picked up the scoring after
Conor Morgan (Victoria, B.C.) had to sit with foul trouble, including a thunderous dunk and two free throws late in the third to make a six-point game at 62-56.Â
Â
The Thunderbirds couldn't extend their momentum as the Dinos rebuilt their double-digit lead, which was at 72-60 after three quarters.
Â
UBC didn't get closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Â
Forward
David Wagner (Kamloops, B.C.) scored 16 points while Jalalpoor added 13. Zaharijevic had 11 and a team-high six rebounds off the bench.
Â
Calgary won the rebounding battle 44-34.
Â
UBC has finished the 2015 portion of its Canada West men's basketball schedule. The Thunderbirds will travel to California next month to play three non-conference games against NAIA competition, including two at the Tom Byron Classic at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif., Dec. 29-30.
Â
UBC's next Canada West games will be Jan. 8-9 at home against Lethbridge.
