VANCOUVER – The Calgary Dinos women's basketball team (6-1) subdued the visiting UBC Thunderbirds (2-5) with a 70-50 win on Friday night.
Â
Rookie
Jessica Hanson (Vancouver) led the T-Birds in scoring with 13 points, while guard
Shilpa Khanna (Surrey, B.C.) grabbed nine rebounds.
Â
Hanson's layup and ensuing foul shot gave UBC an early 17-12 lead with just over three minutes to go in the first quarter but the Dinos dominated the rest of the first half, giving up just seven points the rest of the way. Calgary led 36-23 at the mid-game break.
Â
The Thunderbirds couldn't reduce their deficit to single digits in the second half.
Â
A pair of foul shots from guard
Diana Lee (North Vancouver) and a jumper from forward
Andrea Strujic (Vancouver) got UBC within 12 points at 41-29 with 7:17 in the third quarter. But Calgary was able to stop any big Thunderbirds runs from materializing, and led 56-41 going into the final quarter.
Â
Khanna scored five of UBC's nine points in the final period.
Â
The Thunderbirds made 17 of their 62 shots (27.4 per cent) from the field on Friday while Calgary was 25-for-70 (35.7 per cent). The Dinos also outscored UBC 34-16 in the paint.
Â
The two teams will play again tomorrow at 4 p.m. PT at Calgary's Jack Simpson Gym.
