VANCOUVER – The No. 10-ranked UBC Thunderbirds take a five-game winning streak into Calgary as they face the No. 8 Dinos in one of the marquee men's basketball matchups in the CIS this weekend.
UBC is tied for first in the Canada West's Pioneer Division with a record of 5-1, while Calgary is third at 4-2. The teams will play at 7 p.m. PT on Friday night at Jack Simpson Gymnasium, while Saturday's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT.
UBC won both games at Saskatchewan last weekend, winning 81-72 on Friday and 101-98 in overtime on Saturday.
Guard
Jordan Jensen-Whyte (Calgary) recorded a game-high 22 points to lead four T-Birds in double digits. UBC led by 11 points with just over three minutes to go but the Huskies cut that advantage to just four points with 1:16 remaining. But Thunderbirds forward
Will Ondrik (Vernon, B.C.) hit a three-point shot on the next possession to help UBC fight off the comeback.
On the next night, forward
Conor Morgan (Victoria, B.C.) nailed a three-point basket with two seconds left in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime with the score tied 88-88. Morgan followed up with the first basket in the extra period to give the T-Birds the lead, which they didn't relinquish.Â
For the season, four UBC players average at least 10 points a game, led by Jensen-Whyte, who scores 16.7 points per contest, which is 13th in the Canada West. Morgan is next at 13.7 points a game, followed by forwards Ondrik (12.0) and
David Wagner (Kamloops, B.C.) (10.7).Â
Point guard
Phil Jalalpoor (Shifferstadt, Germany) averages 8.5 points a game, as does guard A. J. Holloway (Tacoma, Wash.), who has provided a steady contribution off the bench.
This balanced offence has UBC third in the Canada West in scoring with 86.2 points a game. The Thunderbirds are also first in rebounding margin (8.2) and get to the free-throw line a league-best 19 times per game.
Calgary split its doubleheader at Victoria, tied with UBC at 5-1, last weekend in the provincial capital. The Vikes won 72-71 on Friday while the Dinos claimed a 79-75 decision on Saturday.
Thomas Cooper has taken the conference by storm on the offensive end. The US transfer has led the Dinos in scoring in every game so far and leads the conference in points per game (25.7) and three-point percentage (57.1).
It should be a nice rebounding battle this weekend as Calgary is currently third in the conferece in rebounding margin. Cooper leads the Dinos with 8.8 boards per game.
Reigning Canada West Rookie of the Year Lars Schlueter is having a strong sophomore season, as the only other Dino averaging double-figures at 11 points per game.
Last season, the two squads played to an exciting split at War Memorial Gymnasium in Vancouver. The Dinos won the Friday game on a buzzer-beating three-pointer 93-92, while the Thunderbirds won the Saturday matchup 93-88.
Calgary is looking for its first regular-season home victory against UBC since November of 2011
