VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (3-1) are looking to extend their three-game winning streak this weekend as they visit the Saskatchewan Huskies (1-3) for a Friday-Saturday Canada West men's basketball doubleheader in Saskatoon.
Â
After a five-point loss to Alberta in the first conference game of the season, UBC has rebounded to win its last three, including two against Trinity Western – by scores of 94-69 and 85-75 – last weekend at home.
Â
The Thunderbirds boast a balanced offence as all five starters average at least 9.8 points per game. Guard
Jordan Jensen-Whyte (Calgary) leads the way with 15 points per outing.
Â
Forward
Conor Morgan (Victoria, B.C.) is averaging 12.8, followed by forward
David Wagner (Kamloops, B.C.) (11.8),
Will Ondrik (Vernon, B.C.) (10.5) and
Phil Jalalpoor (Shifferstadt, Germany) (9.8).
Â
Guard
A. J. Holloway (Tacoma, Wash.) is averaging 8.8 points off the bench.
Â
Defensively, UBC is third in the Canada West, giving up 69.3 points per contest. Opponents are shooting just 37.3 per cent against the Thunderbirds, the second-best mark in the league.
Â
Last weekend, Saskatchewan was swept by the Victoria Vikes on the road. The Huskies nearly pulled out a victory on Saturday night, but fell by 10 after leading for the majority of the first three quarters.
Fifth-year guard Evan Ostertag has scored 18.3 points per game to lead a young Huskies squad. Southwestern College (Calif.) transfer Shawn Lathan has added another 13.5 points per game while leading the Huskies in rebounding by averaging 6.5 boards per night.
With a couple of injuries in the front-court the Huskies sit near the bottom of the Canada West in rebounding and blocked shots, but have made up for it by limiting turnovers and knocking down shots from long range. Saskatchewan is second in the conference in turnovers, averaging 12.8 per game and is sixth in three-point shooting at 37.1 per cent.
Â
UBC went 2-1 against Saskatchewan last season, winning both conference games before dropping their playoff matchup at the Canada West Final Four.
