REGINA, Sask. -- The UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball team blanked the host Regina Cougars in Canada West action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport on Friday night.
The Thunderbirds, who hold the No. 8-ranking in the CIS, took the match in straight sets - 25-21, 25-18 and 25-16.
"I'm pleased with the result that was due in large part to an efficient offensive performance," said UBC head coach
Doug Reimer. "In addition to outside hitters doing well mixing up their shots and angles and I thought the setters did a nice job did putting them in positions to succeed. We also executed the majority of the game plan and hope we can continue tomorrow.
After the Cougars let a tightly-contested first set slip away, the momentum seemed to shift towards the Thunderbirds, as the visitors rolled to a three-set victory to spoil the Cougars' home opener.
Danielle Brisebois (Bolton, Ont.) led the attack for the Thunderbirds, totalling 15 kills on only 18 attempts.
Laura MacTaggart (Lacombe, Alta.) (12) and
Alissa Coulter (Calgary) (11) also hit double digit kills. Tori Gylnn notched five for the Cougars, who got four kills from both Ashlee Sandiford and Jenna Krahn.
Satomi Togawa had 20 assists for the Cougars, while Thunderbird setter
Alessandra Gentile (Port Moody, B.C.) posted 35. Krahn also led the Cougars with six digs in the match.
UBC improves to 3-0 after hitting at an impressive .463 clip, while the Cougars attack could only muster a .110 rate.
The Cougars (0-4) and Thunderbirds will square off again on Saturday evening, with game time slated for 5 p.m. at the CKHS.
