VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's basketball team will take on the Thompson Rivers WolfPack tonight, followed by a matchup with the MacEwan Griffins tomorrow evening. Both games will start at 5 p.m., at War Memorial Gymnasium. The two contests will serve as the final tune-ups for the 'Birds, as they prepare for their Canada West season opener next week against the Alberta Pandas.
The Thunderbirds have gone 2-4 in non-conference play this year, as they dropped their last two contests against the visiting Ryerson Rams (76-66) and Western Mustangs(78-63). Fourth-year forward
Kara Spotton has been a bright spot for the team, as the Fort Collins, Colo., native has averaged 23.2 points per game in her six appearances so far in the pre-season campaign.
Thompson Rivers has fared marginally better than the 'Birds in their exhibition schedule, going 3-5. The WolfPack will be led offensively by fourth-year forward Kassie Colonna, who returns after averaging 12.1 points per game last season.
MacEwan is 8-1 so far this season, having played against mostly Alberta colleges. The Griffins' record includes their most recent performance, a dominant 69-50 win over the Trinity Western Spartans. Fourth-year guard Kendall Lyon will take the reins for MacEwan, as her 13.3 points per game average from last season is tops among returning players.
