RECAP: Spotton leads ‘Birds at Ryerson tournament

VANCOUVER – Fourth-year forward Kara Spotton (Fort Collins, Colo.) led the UBC Thunderbirds in scoring in all three of the team's games at the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic, hosted by Ryerson in Toronto this weekend.

UBC lost a pair of 10-point games to Guelph (65-55) on Friday and Laval (66-56) on Saturday before rebounding to upend York (58-52) on Sunday.

Spotton had a monster 29-point, 12-rebound performance against York.

Her jumper with 2:49 left in the third quarter put UBC ahead 48-32 for the team's largest lead of the game. That lead was down to six points midway through the fourth, but Spotton hit back-to-back jump shots to restore the team's double-digit lead. She added one final bucket with 2:37 left in the fourth to cap off UBC's offence for the day.

On Saturday, Spotton scored 15 points to lead the blue and gold lineup. Forward Adrienne Parkin (Vancouver) and point guard Diana Lee (North Vancouver) had 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Thunderbirds owned a six-point lead (39-33), their largest of the game, at 4:18 of the third quarter, but the Rouge et Or immediately replied with a 22-2 run that extended into the fourth and sealed the victory.

Against Guelph, Spotton knocked down 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds and added three blocks in just 26 minutes of play.

UBC went into the half down 24-22 but Guelph opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run. The Thunderbirds closed to within two (54-52) early in the fourth but the Gryphons were able to create some separation, earning a double-digit victory.

The Thunderbirds will return home and play two more non-conference games this week at War Memorial Gymnasium. UBC will host Ryerson on Thursday at 6 p.m., and Western on Sunday at 12 noon.
