VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds need to win one of their two games against the Calgary Dinos this weekend to clinch second place in the Canada West women's field hockey standings and a berth to the CIS championship tournament in November.
This weekend's series at Wright Field, with games on Saturday, Oct. 17 and Sunday, Oct. 18 at 11 a.m., mark the end of the regular season for the UBC squad.
The T-Birds enter the weekend with a 2-3-1 record, while the Dinos are currently sitting in last place with a 0-4 mark and are still looking for their first league win since 2011. A triumph by UBC on either Saturday or Sunday would make it mathematically impossible for Calgary to catch the Thunderbirds despite having two games in hand. Two ties would also do the trick for the home side.
Earlier in the season, UBC swept Calgary on their own turf, by scores of 2-1 and 2-0. In the first contest between the teams, UBC's
Sarah Keglowitsch (Shawnigan Lake, B.C.) scored two late goals to give her team a come-from-behind victory. The next day, the offensive pressure put on by the 'Birds was too much, as they left Calgary with a 2-0 win. Though Calgary maintained a strong resistance, it ended up falling to goals from
Gabby Jayme (Richmond, B.C.) and
Hannah Haughn (West Vancouver). It was UBC's first shutout of the year.
The T-Birds are coming off a loss and a tie against the Victoria Vikes last weekend. UBC lost its first game (1-0) and tied the second (1-1) against the first-place Vikes; it is the only game Victoria hasn't won this season. UBC's
Rowan Harris (Ottawa) was strong in goal, making numerous excellent saves to give her team opportunities to take points off Victoria.
The Dinos are coming off a pair of 2-0 defeats at the hands of the Vikes, on the weekend of Oct. 3-4, and have only tallied one goal in four matches this year.
