Calgary, AB – Two goals in the opening 10 minutes of the game sparked the UBC Thunderbirds to their first victory of the season in Canada West field hockey as they defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Hawkings Field in Calgary, AB.
UBC improves to 1-0-2 on the season, while Calgary suffers its third loss in as many games on a cool, drizzly day in Calgary.
With the win, head coach
Robin D'Abreo earns his first career CIS victory.
Sophie Jones converted a penalty corner for the Thunderbirds less than two minutes into the contest, and
Hannah Haughn added a second before the 10-minute mark as the Thunderbirds took the play to the Dinos early, before the hosts could get their feet under them following a bye week. UBC added a third tally in the 20th minute when
Gabby Jayme converted another penalty corner as UBC took a 3-0 lead into the half.
The Thunderbirds added another insurance marker 15 minutes into the second half when
Emily Prystupa scored a beauty off yet another corner opportunity. Prystupa was able to collect a rebound and lift it over a sprawling Calgary 'keeper Alicia Frisch to record the fourth of the day for UBC.
Calgary's lone scoring opportunity of the day came late in the opening half when Nadia Izzo streaked in on the right side. Her shot from the outside made it through but sailed just wide of the UBC goal, protected by
Lauren Logush.
Logush gave way to
Rowan Harris in the UBC net at half time, and the two shared the shutout on the day.
Calgary and UBC renew acquaintances Sunday afternoon at Hawkings Field, beginning at 1 p.m. MT – and the Dinos will look for a bounce-back performance similar to the one they put up on the second day against Victoria two weeks ago.
