VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball team open preseason play by winning two of three matches at the Griffin-Panda Classic, co-hosted by MacEwan University and the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
Â
The team also played several scrimmages against Canada West schools over the course of the event.
Â
On Thursday night, UBC defeated the Mt. Royal University Cougars in straight sets by scores of 27-25, 25-19, 25-14. The T-Birds suffered their lone loss on Friday, dropping a four-set match to the Brandon University Bobcats (25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 25-16). The team concluded its visit to Edmonton with a thrilling five-set victory of the University of Alberta Pandas (21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12).
Â
"It was a great way to cap off our first competition of the season," said UBC head coach
Doug Reimer. "The team played with great energy and showed a lot of resilience in pushing through for a hard-fought win over Alberta.
It was great to get a lot of match and scrimmage time in with seven other Canada West teams, and we grew a lot as a group over the three days of play."
Â
The next game action for Reimer's team will come in October, when UBC hosts the West Coast Classic Oct. 2-5 at War Memorial Gymnasium.
