VANCOUVER -Â
Sean Callegari gave the UBC Thunderbirds seven great innings of work on Friday in Portland, striking out eight and allowing just one run on five hits as the 'Birds beat the Concordia Cavaliers 3-1 in the first of four-game set.
The Cavs got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with two straight singles off
Curtis Taylor, but he shut things down by inducing two straight flyouts to end the game and get his third save of the season. Callegari gets the win to move to 2-1 this year.Â
After the T-Birds left two men on base in each of the first two innings,
Kevin Biro got the scoring started in the third inning with a two-run double to centre that scored
Bryan Arthur and
Jerod Bartnik.
Bruce Yari added another run with a clutch two-out RBI single in the fifth inning.Â
Cavaliers starter Jason Snodgrass managed to dance out of a lot of tight spots, including a bases loaded jam with one out in the sixth, to limit the damage. He allowed three runs on 10 hits over six full innings of work.Â
UBC finished with 11 hits and no errors, while the Cavs had seven hits and two errors. Biro set the pace with a 3-for-5 day and the two RBIs. Arthur went 2-for-4 with a walk, and
Tyson Popoff went 2-for-5. Ryan McGonile cashed in the lone run for the Cavs with an RBI single in the seventh.Â
The Cavs fall to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play. UBC is now 10-5 overall and 2-2 in conference. The teams have a doubleheader scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday, and the series wraps up with game four on Sunday at 11 a.m.Â
