VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds scored a pair of wins on the second day of the Porter Park Classic in Portland, Ore., on Saturday, including a victory over the No. 2-ranked Lewis-Clark State Warriors. With the triumphs, the team improves to 7-3 in 2014.
Rookie
Vinny Martin knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the first inning, scoring
Matt Spillman, against LC State.
Tyson Popoff then drove in
Brody Hawkins for an insurance run in the next inning to round out the scoring.
The Warriors spent the entire game threatening, but ultimately failing, to catch up. They stranded 10 runners today, including two in the second, third, fourth, and eighth innings. LC State also grounded into two double plays as UBC's defence and pitching held firm.
Kyle Knigge tried to score from second in the third on a single to centre field but T-Birds' outfielder
Bryan Arthur threw out the runner at home to preserve the shutout for UBC pitcher
Jeremy Newton, who earned his first victory of the season. The Toronto native gave up 11 hits, but didn't surrender a run or a walk in seven innings as he got double plays and other help from his defence when needed.
LC State put men on second and third with one out in the eighth inning but UBC reliever
Alex Webb worked out of the jam to earn the save. Popoff finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
In the opening game of the day, the 'Birds defeated the Montana State-Billings Yellowjackets, an NCAA Div. II team, by a score of 8-2.
Taking advantage of four errors by MSU-Billings, UBC overcame a first-inning deficit with three runs each in the second and third.
With two out and the bases loaded in the second,
Matt Spillman hit a clutch three-RBI double to left field to get the T-Birds on the scoreboard.
Martin and
Tyler Enns added RBI-singles in the third to make it 5-1 before Enns scored himself on a throwing error after stealing third base. Martin and Enns earned RBI's again in the seventh to make it 8-2.
Going four innings,
Conor Lillis-White started for UBC and was relieved by
Tyler Gillies, who earned the win. Reliever
Curtis Taylor was again outstanding going 2.1 innings without giving up a run while striking out three batters.
The Thunderbirds collected 11 hits in the game Enns notching three and
Jerod Bartnik and
Kevin Biro each recording 2-hit games.
Enns, the centre fielder, also scored twice and stole two bases. As a team, UBC had six stolen bases, which is the second-most in school history and behind only the seven recorded in a March 16, 2003 game against Willamette.
UBC, now 3-0 in the Porter Park Classic hosted by Concordia (Ore.), will rematch LCSC at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
