T-Birds open Hawaii trip with win over Chaminade

VANCOUVER – Fifth-year forward Tommy Nixon scored the final three points, including the game-winning jump shot with two seconds remaining, to give the UBC Thunderbirds a 92-91 victory over the Chaminade Silverswords in a scrimmage on Tuesday in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was the opening outing for the team on its holiday trip to Hawaii.

Nixon went 1-for-2 at the foul line with 56 seconds left in the game to bring the Thunderbirds to within one point of the hosts at 91-90.  Then with just two ticks left on the clock, he converted on a jumper, after grabbing an offensive rebound, to put his team on top.

The bucket capped off a 16-7 run by UBC to end the game. The T-Birds were down 84-76 with 5:11 left in the second half after a basket from Lee Bailey. Nixon immediately replied with a three-point basket and ended up with eight of the 16 UBC points in the game-ending run.

Nixon finished the day with 18 points for UBC, which was paced by second-year guard Kedar Wright's 25-point performance off the bench. Wright made seven of UBC's 14 buckets, on 25 chances, from behind the arc.

The team was 30-of-54 from the field overall (55.6 per cent) and out-rebounded Chaminade 34-25.

UBC will face Hawaii Pacific at 5 p.m. PT tomorrow in Honolulu. Fans can view the game live on the Internet at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/hpusharks
