VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds went 1-3 at the West Coast Classic women's volleyball tournament they hosted at War Memorial Gymnasium this weekend.
Â
UBC opened with a four-set (25-10, 25-23, 18-25, 25-23) triumph over the University of Regina Cougars on Thursday night.
Rosie Schlagintweit led the team with 13 kills while
Danielle Brisebois added 11. Brisebois,
Juliana Kaufmanis and
Alissa Coulter all recorded three service aces.
Â
With a very short turnaround, the T-Birds faced the York University Lions of Toronto on Friday morning, losing in five sets (20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 24-26, 15-9). Brisebois and Coulter knocked down 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
Â
The team played twice on Saturday, beginning with Trinity Western University. The two squads split the first two sets by identical 25-15 scores, but the momentum was with the Spartans after they won the second set and they used it to claim the next two as well for a 3-1 win (15-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-21). Brisebois was once again the leading offensive player for UBC with 13 kills.
Â
The T-Birds wrapped up the weekend with a straight sets loss to the University of Alberta Pandas (25-16, 25-14, 25-20) on Saturday evening. Schlagintweit and
Lisa Barclay – who saw limited action after arriving back in Canada from the World Championship in Italy – both had seven kills.
Â
UBC finishes 3-4 in preseason action and will commence the Canada West regular season on the weekend of Oct. 10-11 in Edmonton against the MacEwan University Griffins.
Â
The first home series for the Thunderbirds will be Oct. 17-18 against the Mt. Royal University Cougars.
