Vancouver - The University of British Columbia women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in exhibition play with a 66-52 victory over UBC Okanagan at War Memorial Gym Saturday night.
Two-time CIS All-Canadian
Kris Young led the way for the Thunderbirds putting up 20 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and adding five assists in just 24 minutes of action. Newcomer
Kara Spotton chipped in with 13 points and nine rebounds, while
Harleen Sidhu was also in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.
After trailing midway through the first quarter, the Thunderbirds started to take control of the game going up 23-17 after 10 minutes of play. They continued to extend their lead in the second quarter thanks to 47 per cent shooting from the floor, compared to just 24 per cent for UBC Okanagan. UBC went ahead by 11 at the half, 38-27.
The second half was no different as UBC maintained a 15-point lead throughout. This allowed head coach
Deb Huband to play her entire bench, giving a lot of players valuable minutes.
A big difference was the Thunderbirds work from the charity stripe. UBC was 15-of-16 from the free thrown line, while UBC Okanagan hit less than 50% from the line, going 11-of-24.
UBC outscored the Heat 28-25 in the second half to win 66-52.
Jessica Jazdarehee led the Heat with 15 points and five rebounds in a losing cause.
The Thunderbirds will continue their exhibition schedule next week when they play host to Queen's University Thursday, October 16 at War Memorial Gym.
