UBC shutout Thompson Rivers 1-0

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in a closely-contested 1-0 Canada West women's soccer game on Friday evening on David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium.

The first half opened with high intensity as both sides came out hungry for a goal right from the opening minute of the game. Just 88 seconds after the opening whistle, TRU midfielder Taylor Miller found room on the left wing and fired a shot across the goal that UBC goalkeeper Marlee Maracle just got a hand on.

As the half wore on, however, UBC managed to keep the pressure constant, leaving TRU in their own end for much of the first half.

The game's lone goal came from defender Aman Shergill in the 38th minute. Shergill made her second goal of the season look easy, scoring unassisted by stealing the ball from outside the box, then dribbling through the defence and then firing a powerful shot into the left side of the net.

Thunderbird fans felt their hearts skip a beat in the 60th minute, as TRU midfielder Kelsey Martin fired a shot which looked right on point until Maracle punched the ball over the net at the last second. Maracle made five saves during the game. Shots during the game favoured UBC 18-8.

The Thunderbirds, now 4-2-1, will face UBC Okanagan (0-5-3) tomorrow evening, 5 p.m. at Thunderbird Stadium. The hard luck WolfPack drop to 0-7 on the season after their fourth consecutive 1-0 loss. TRU will visit the University of Victoria Vikes on Saturday for a 5 p.m. match at Centennial Stadium.
