VANCOUVER – Third-year Sauder School of Business student
Amrit Berar scored both goals in the UBC Thunderbirds' 2-0 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat in Canada West women's soccer action on David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium on Saturday evening.
The opening goal of the game came right off the top. Rookie defender
Emma Kallner took a beautiful corner kick for UBC, and after a series of headers,
Nicole Sydor popped it over to Berar who headed it into the top of the net in the fourth minute of the game.
The pressure did not drop off after the early goal as each loose ball was fiercely contested by both sides, resulting in a fast paced, high intensity first half.
Little changed after the half-time break for these two passionate sides. After trading chances for the better part of the second half, Berar pegged in her second of the night after some sharp passing up the left side from teammates
Shayla Chorney and
Jasmin Dhanda in the 77th minute of the game.
After the second goal, the T-Birds looked more confident than ever, and only stellar goalkeeping from UBCO's Christine Tallon kept UBC from running up the score in the last minutes of the game. Talon made six saves in total throughout the game.
UBC's goaltender
Emily Wilson also had a solid performance, making one save for the clean sheet. The final shot count favoured UBC 16-1.
Despite the dominant showing from her team tonight, assistant coach Lisa White gave full credit to UBCO for their performance throughout the match.
"What you have to withstand with UBCO is their passion," she explained. "They are so passionate and they are a highly competitive team, but we were able to stay calm and keep that calm collective which was a nice change from yesterday to today."
When asked to comment on the star performance from Berar this evening, White lit up immediately. "You can't for more than for a kid to be as coachable as she is," she remarked. "She's making the people around her better as well, her fight and her desire are so contagious. We were very pleased with her performance."
The Thunderbirds, now 5-2-1, will be back in action on October 10 against the University of the Fraser Valley (7-1) who are currently ranked second in the division.
