Thunderbirds dominate Seattle Mountaineers in preseason win

VANCOUVER- The University of British Columbia men's basketball team cruised to a 91-75 victory over the Seattle Mountaneers Friday night at War Memorial Gymnasium. The Thunderbirds controlled the game from start to finish with senior forward Tommy Nixon leading the way with 18 points and second-year Conor Morgan adding 17 points.

UBC started their preseason win with a lead out the gates finishing the first half up 44-39.  Both teams shot well during the first half averaging 50% on field goals alone.

The first half was lead by Morgan who posted 12 points and four assists, tying him with Seattle's Maazin Butler.

The Thunderbirds started to pull away in the second half. Up 57-43 into the third, the T-Birds took over on offence pushing their lead to 14.  With six minutes left in the quarter, the Mountaineers had no choice but to use their timeout and hopefully kill the 'Birds strong momentum. However, UBC continued to roll and pushed back with a 5-0 run after the timeout.

Into the fourth, the Birds lead was still double digits, 67-55. Despite the points on the board, the tenacious Mountaineers kept trying to crack the key, but UBC's strong defence only allowed Seattle low percentage shots from the outside. The Thunderbirds cruised the rest of the way, winning 91-75.

Three other Thunderbirds finished in double figures in scoring, Tonner Jackson (12), Jordan Jensen-Whyte (10), and David Wagner (10). Butler led the Mountaineers with 17 points.

UBC will be back in action next Thursday, October 9th when they play host to the Vancouver Balloholics at 7:00 pm at War Memorial Gymnasium.
