Hanson ties Mullins for most wins in UBC history

VANCOUVER – UBC Thunderbirds head coach Kevin Hanson is now tied with Dr. Peter Mullins for most overall wins at UBC with 337. Hanson reached the significant milestone today in Waterloo, Ont., as his team defeated the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 74-49 at their own Hawk Challenge tournament.

Conor Morgan recorded 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four blocks in the victory while teammate Tonner Jackson scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

A big run to finish the second quarter was pivotal for the T-Birds. Down by a bucket with 7:48 left before halftime, UBC scored the next 15 points to build a 34-23 advantage going into the break. Jordan Jensen-Whyte started the run with a layup and Jackson capped it off with one of his own with 35 seconds to go.

The T-Birds continued to build their lead in the third quarter. Morgan's dunk with 4:02 left in the third put UBC up by 19 points. He then nailed a three-point shot to increase the gap to 20 points at 58-38 early in the final quarter.

Laurier was never within nine points of UBC in the second half as the T-Birds held their biggest lead at the buzzer.

The blue and gold made 30 of their 62 shots from the field (48.4 per cent) on Saturday while holding Laurier to 21-of-78 shooting (26.9 per cent).

UBC was also 11-of-20 from the foul line and outrebounded the hosts 53-44.

Coach Hanson will get an opportunity to break the school wins record on Sunday when the team faces the University of Guelph Gryphons on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT.
