VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds women's field hockey team hit the seven-goal mark for the second straight day in a shutout of the visiting University of Calgary Dinos on Sunday afternoon at Wright Field.
Â
Fourth year
Kate Gillis led the team offensively, tallying four goals for the Thunderbirds, including the only two goals in the first half (third and 17th minutes). She felt that the team's success "all started in the backfield and [Gillis] was just fortunate to be in the right position at the right time."
Natalie Sourisseau,
Cassandra Tayler, and
Hannah Haughn also contributed goals for UBC. Gillis stated that this weekend served as a "real momentum builder" for the team, and Haughn agreed, noting that they "used this weekend to come together as a team."
Calgary did not record a shot on net against the aggressive UBC defence.
UBC head coach Hash Kanjee was pleased with the team's performance, noting that they "tried a few different line-ups and started to adapt better as the game progressed."
This is not surprising statement to the spectators, who watched the Thunderbirds persevere through a chilling rainstorm and then score three times within a two-and-a-half minute span during the middle of the second half.
Â
Next week, the women's field hockey team will lose six players to Mendoza, Argentina, where they will represent Canada in the Pan American Cup. When asked if this would disrupt the team dynamic, Haughn stated that "it is really tough on the girls since we have such a big squad; but, hopefully, when we come back, we will just be able to come back and be part of the team again."
Kanjee seems undaunted by this temporary roster changed: "We have some depth to the team and I'm excited to see what we can do with that."Â
The players will not available for UBC's next games at Victoria, Sept. 28-29.
