Vancouver. BC - The UBC Thunderbirds women's field hockey team began its season with a dominant 7-1 win over the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday. There is no doubt that the Thunderbirds worked diligently in the off-season and are aiming to maintain their title as National Champions.
Â
Led by Captain
Miranda Mann, the Thunderbirds came out determined and only increased their intensity throughout the game. Dominating the offense was
Hannah Haughn, a second-year from North Vancouver who scored the first goal for UBC. Haughn continued the offensive onslaught, scoring three more times in the remainder of the game. Mann contributed the second goal and
Natalie Sourisseau followed suit, scoring twice for the Thunderbirds in the second half.
Â
Defensively, UBC was fierce, not allowing a single shot on goal until late in the second half. The resilient defense continuously defeated Calgary, who found themselves with few offensive opportunities throughout the entirety of the game. The Thunderbirds' communicated effectively, as exemplified by their exceptional passing and ball movement.
Â
Head Coach, Hash Kanjee, said he was pleased with the team's performance, particularly in the second half. Though he was disappointed that the team let up a goal to Calgary late in the game, he recognized that "the skill level we are playing at is very, very high" and that there was "good passing in the back field." Furthermore, he commended the team on their collective effort and said he is looking forward to the rest of the season.

Amidst the dreary afternoon, the Thunderbirds were electrified with energy and finished with a resounding 7-1 victory over Calgary. Sunday, the teams will face-off again at 1 P.M. on Wright Field.Â
