VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds baseball team fell behind early and ultimately dropped a 9-3 decision to the Vanguard University Lions in Costa Mesa, California on Tuesday.
BOX SCORE
Vanguard's offensive output in the first inning was enough to win the game. The Lions scored four runs, two unearned, in the bottom of the first. They pushed their lead to 7-0 by the end of the third.
UBC didn't get on the scoreboard until the top of the seventh inning. Down 9-0 with one out,
Mike Hole (Vancouver, BC) singled to left field. He advanced to third base on a
Jerod Bartnik (Surrey, BC) double. Hole scored when
Brody Hawkins (Surrey, BC) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
The next batter
Turner Spears (Guelph, ON) got his first-ever NAIA RBI when he knocked a single to centre to bring home Bartnik.
In the top of the eighth inning, UBC rounded out the scoring with one more run.
Andrew Firth (London, ON) crossed home plate when Hole grounded out to the Vanguard shortstop. Firth had walked to lead off. He then moved to second on an
Austin Fruson (Medicine Hat, AB) single before getting to third on a balk.
UBC starter
Matt Trimble (Coquitlam, BC) took the loss after giving up four earned runs in 2.1 innings.
Bryan Pawlina (Courtenay, BC) pitched a perfect 2.2 innings in relief.
UBC's three-game winning streak is over. The Thunderbirds (4-4) will face Whittier College on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
