Thousand Oaks, California -
Kevin Biro's two run homer in the top of the eighth inning broke a 4-4 tie and helped the UBC Thunderbirds baseball team earn a 7-5 victory over California Lutheran University Sunday afternoon.
With the victory the Thunderbirds moved back to .500 on the season with a record of 3-3. Sunday's game marked game two of UBC's eight games in eight days against California competition. Trailing 4-3 heading into the top of the eighth inning, the Thunderbirds rallied to score three runs in the inning, highlighted by Biro's two run shot. He finished the day 2-4, with 2 RBI, and a run scored. The Deep Bay, BC apparently enjoys playing in California because in the first two games of the trip he has been swinging a hot stick, going a combined 5-9 (.556 batting average), with 6 runs, 5 RBI, a double, a triple, and a home run.
To go along with some timely hitting, the 'Birds got some excellent relief work on the mound from
Bryan Pawlina and
Miles Verweel. Pawlina picked up the win after going 2 1/3 innings, giving up two hits, and just one run, while striking out three. Verweel gets credit for the save after giving up no hits and no runs in 2/3 innings of work.
Andrew Firth finished 2-3 with three runs scored, while
Brody Hawkins went 2-5, with a double and a RBI.
The 'Birds continue their eight game road trip Monday afternoon against the University of Redlands.
