Anaheim, CA - The UBC Thunderbirds bats came alive on game one of their eight game California tour, exploding for 20 hits and 21 runs in a 21-7 victory over Bethesda University of California. With the win UBC improves to 2-3 on the season.
The Thunderbirds got off to a great start scoring five runs in the first inning, highlighted by three RBI triples. UBC would go on to score four runs in the third inning, two in the fourth, four runs in the seventh, three more in the eighth, and finally another three runs in the ninth inning.
Four players had three hits on the day including
Greg Densem, who went 3-5, with a home run, 4 RBI, and 4 runs scored.
Mike Hole also homered on the day, finishing 3-4 with 3 RBI, and 3 runs.
Kevin Biro crossed the plate five times, going 3-5, with a double, a triple, and 3 RBI and
Austin Fruson was 3-5, with 4 RBI.
"After a tough two days on the bus to get down here, it was nice to see the offense break out," said UBC head coach
Terry McKaig. "It's apparent the hitters enjoy hitting more in sunny 80 degree temperatures than back home."
Alex Graham got the start on the mound. The right hander went three innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs, while striking out three.
Alex Webb followed up with four impressive innings of work, allowing just one hit, no runs, and striking out four.
Matt Timble took over in the eighth inning, but had a rough go. He went just a third of an inning, giving up three earned runs on five hits. He was relieved by
Tavis Bruce who went the rest of the way, striking out one and allowing just one hit.
Saturday marked the first game of an eight day road trip which continues Sunday against California Lutheran University.
"This trip will be a good test for us with 8 games in 8 days, especially after the disappointing weekend in Lewiston to start the season," said McKaig.
