VANCOUVER – The Fraser Valley Cascades (5-5) used a 13-1 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from the UBC Thunderbirds (4-6) for a 71-63 victory on Saturday night in Canada West men's basketball action.

Kedar Wright nailed a three-point shot to open the fourth quarter and give his Thunderbirds a 54-52 lead over the host Cascades.

But over the next seven minutes and 39 seconds, Fraser Valley stifled the UBC offence, surrendering just a single Wright foul shot while scoring 13 points, to seal the win.

Back-to-back triples by
Andrew McGuinness closed the gap to 65-61 with 50 seconds left in the fourth. After a layup by UFV's Kevon Parchment, McGuinness hit his third consecutive bucket to make it a two-possession game at 67-63 with just over half a minute left in the fourth quarter but that would be it for UBC's scoring on the night.

UFV led by nine points in the first half twice. A Kevin Ford three-point shot put the home team up 29-20 early in the second quarter but the Thunderbirds, with contributions from McGuinness,
Brylle Kamen,
Tonner Jackson and
Isaiah Solomon, ended the half on a 14-2 run, which gave them a 42-38 lead at the break.

Forward Kamen led UBC with 14 points and eight rebounds while point guard Solomon recorded 12 points, 10 assists and five rebounds. McGuinness ended the night with 13 points.

Fraser Valley's Parchment led all players with 26 points and 15 rebounds.

UBC made 32.4 per cent of its field goal attempts in the game, and was just 7-for-35 in the second half. UFV hit 40 per cent of its shots.

The Cascades outscored the T-Birds 26-8 in the paint and had a 42-31 advantage in rebounds. UFV was also 13-18 from the foul line while UBC made it to the charity stripe just six times, making five shots.

Both teams are now finished conference play for 2013. UBC's next Canada West regular season games will be on the weekend of Jan. 10-11, 2014, when the T-Birds host Alberta and Saskatchewan at War Memorial Gym.
