Vancouver – It was another tough night offensively for the undermanned UBC Thunderbirds in Kamloops on Saturday, shooting under 30 percent from the floor as the Thompson Rivers WolfPack earned the weekend sweep with an 86-56 win.
Â
The T-Birds went 0-for-14 from three-point range, while the WolfPack knocked down nine of 21 threes. Overall the 'Pack shot .455, led by Ta'Quan Zimmerman's 23 points, and UBC continued to struggle to score the basketball with so many injuries affecting the team.
Â
It was the middle quarters that separated the teams on Saturday, as the 'Pack outscored UBC 49-23 in the second and third combined. Thompson Rivers had a 12-0 run in the second quarter and a 13-0 run in the third to put some distance between themselves and the 'Birds.
Â
After the T-Birds managed to get a couple early fouls on Zimmerman and hold him to a relatively quiet Friday night, the third-year guard resumed his red-hot shooting on Saturday, knocking down eight of 10 field goals, including a pair of threes. He also dished out five assists.
Â
Will Ondrik had 14 points, three assist and six rebounds, and Josh Wolfram added 12 points and nine rebounds, helping Thompson Rivers win the battle on the boards 46-38.
Â
T-Birds rookie
Harpreet Randhawa made the most of his 22 minutes off the bench, tying for the team lead with 13 points, mostly at the free throw line, where he went 9-for-12. He had four rebounds, two blocks and an assist.
Â
David Wagner also had 13 points and seven rebounds, while
Tonner Jackson added 11 points. But the T-Birds couldn't get any offence from their depleted guard ranks, which combined to shoot 4-for-21 in the game.
Isaiah Solomon is still sidelined with his injury, and
Jordan Jensen-Whyte came off the bench for limited action for a second straight game after he was injured last week.
Â
The WolfPack improve to 4-2 with the win, while UBC falls to 2-4. The T-Birds will get a chance to regroup at home next weekend when they host two Prairie Division opponents moving in opposite directions.
Â
The 5-0 Winnipeg Wesmen will be in War Memorial Gym on Friday, November 22 at 8 p.m., and the 1-5 Manitoba Bisons follow up on Saturday the 23
rd at 7 p.m.
